While glass is a miracle material it isn't perfect. It's microscopically irregular pores trap and hold moisture and all manner of contamination. When it rains, water emulsifies the rubber, salt, road oils, pollution and brake dust particles on the pavements surface. When you're in traffic, this grit and grime gets splattered on your car's windshield. Now you have the action of the wiper blade exerting 1000 pounds of pressure per square inch, combined with grit, oils and metallic brake dust particles grinding away the glass, forcing grime into the microscopic pores. This is why glass smears regardless of how fast the wipers are operating.

A better solution would be to seal the pores in the glass making the windscreen water repellent. Now water would "bead" on the surface and the droplets would be whisked away in the air stream. Rain Clear Gel was tested in Florida and it lasted over 30 days even in the rainy season. In areas of less rainfall, it will last much, much longer. At speeds of 45 mph or more, rain simply blows off the surface. To test for smearing, we treated on half of our cars windshield with Rain Clear Gel and drove in the rain, under 45 mph, with the wipers on. The side treated with Rain Clear remained clear and virtually smear free. The uncoated side smeared at every wiper speed, dramatically reducing vision. At speeds over 45 mph, with the wipers off, it was no contest. The Rain Clear treated side offered unrestricted vision. Water never filmed. It beaded into droplets and was blown off in the air stream. On the untreated side, water filming increased with speed, completely obscuring visibility at about 50 mph.

In every test condition, rain or shine, with or without the wipers operating, we could not detect any drawbacks to having Rain Clear on the glass. Rain Clear Gel offered dramatically improved vision while driving in the rain without any negative side effects. I highly recommend using this product on your car's front, side and rear windows.
